Strengths

Strong reliability; validated with UK nursing students and later with Italian nurses and nursing students.

Cautions

Limited validation with U.S. students, K–12 students, and students outside health-professions education.

The Self-Rating Scale of Self-Directed Learning is a self-report survey that measures students’ perceptions of their ability to manage and direct their own learning. It focuses on skills such as monitoring learning progress, identifying areas for improvement, and taking responsibility for learning.

The scale can be used in higher education research or improvement efforts to understand students’ self-directed learning skills and identify areas where additional support may be useful. It was developed and tested with higher education students and is intended to support the development of independent and lifelong learning skills.
