Strengths

Strong reliability; validated with U.S. middle and high school students for assessing confidence in managing learning tasks and strategies. Useful for examining relationships between self-efficacy for learning, self-regulated learning, and academic performance.

Cautions

Limited validation with elementary students, college students, and adult learners.

The Self-Efficacy for Learning Form (SELF) is a self-report survey that measures students’ confidence in their ability to use self-regulated learning strategies for academic tasks. It focuses on beliefs about using processes such as planning, organizing, monitoring, and managing learning. An abridged version, the SELF-A, is also available.

The SELF can be used in education research to examine students’ self-efficacy for self-regulated learning and its relationship to academic behaviors and achievement. The original study examined the instrument with college students and found strong internal reliability. The SELF and SELF-A were also related to measures such as homework quantity and quality, grades, and instructor ratings of students’ self-regulated learning skills. The instrument was developed and validated with postsecondary students.
