Promoting Student Success in Early College Credit Courses
Category: Student Learning
Designed for online learning: Directly relevant for virtual and hybrid courses. Focuses on actionable behaviors: Includes concrete strategies like time management and help-seeking.
Some items may not fit all contexts: Certain behaviors (e.g., discussion boards) may not apply in every course. Variable consistency across subscales: Not all sections of the survey may perform equally well (e.g., help-seeking and time management.
The Online Learning Self-Efficacy Scale (OLSES) is a 22-item self-report questionnaire that measures students’ confidence in their ability to succeed in online learning. It includes three subscales: learning in the online environment, time management, and technology use. The scale was developed for students in paced online courses and is intended primarily for postsecondary students.
The OLSES can be used in education research or school improvement to understand students’ perceived readiness for online learning. It may help identify areas where students feel less confident, such as managing their time or using technology. The original study examined the scale with postsecondary students with and without prior online learning experience.
