Strengths

Explicitly aligned to NGSS three-dimensional expectations and include clear connections to specific performance expectations

Cautions

Require significant instructional time to administer and discuss.

The elementary assessments developed through the Tennessee District Science Network (TDSciN) are a set of performance-based science tasks designed to measure students’ three-dimensional learning aligned with current science standards. Each assessment is structured around a phenomenon- or problem-based scenario that provides the context for student work. Tasks include a combination of materials such as written information, data displays, diagrams, or models that students use to make sense of the scenario. Students respond to a series of prompts that require them to explain ideas, analyze information, and apply scientific reasoning.

The tasks are designed to integrate multiple dimensions of science learning, including disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. Students are often asked to construct explanations, develop or use models, and provide evidence-based reasoning in response to questions.

Assessment materials also include scoring guidance and rubrics that describe expected student performance and support evaluation of responses. Tasks may incorporate a range of response types, including written explanations and other student-generated artifacts.
