Instrument Overview

The Student Measure of Culturally Responsive Teaching (SMCRT) is a student survey that captures middle school students’ views of their teachers’ culturally responsive practices. It was developed by adapting items from an existing teacher-focused measure so that questions reflect how students experience instruction. The tool was tested with a large sample of seventh graders and is designed to highlight how well teachers connect instruction to students’ cultural backgrounds, identities, and ways of communicating.

The SMCRT includes three main areas: diverse teaching practices, cultural engagement, and affirmation of diverse language use. These areas help show whether classroom instruction feels inclusive and responsive to students from different cultural groups. Early testing of the survey found strong evidence of reliability and consistency across student groups. The SMCRT can be used by researchers and school teams to understand students’ experiences and to identify areas where teachers may strengthen culturally responsive practices.
