Strengths

NGSS-aligned assessments that use performance-based, phenomenon-driven tasks that require students to apply knowledge and practices in realistic contexts, which helps capture deeper understanding and supports meaningful implementation of the standards.

Cautions

Performance-based tasks can be time-intensive to administer and score, especially since they often involve open-ended responses that require rubric-based evaluation rather than quick, objective grading.

The Stanford NGSS Assessment Project (SNAP) assessments are a coordinated system of three types of science assessments designed to measure students’ three-dimensional learning aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These assessments are developed across domains including physical science, life science, earth and space science, and engineering.

The system includes three main assessment types. Short-response items consist of selected-response and constructed-response questions that can be used individually or in clusters to probe students’ understanding of key concepts and practices. Short Performance Assessments (SPAs) are brief, individual tasks (typically 20–40 minutes) administered after a lesson sequence to evaluate students’ ability to integrate the three dimensions of a single performance expectation. Instructionally-Embedded Assessments (IEAs) are longer, multi-day performance tasks integrated into instruction that assess students’ ability to apply knowledge and practices within extended investigations or problem-based scenarios.
