Strengths

Each NGSS aligned unit inlcudes a pre and post assessment in addition to a formative assessment for teachers to measure student learning.

Cautions

Embedded assessments are closely tied to specific instructional contexts and storylines in the Science Matters curriculum.

The Science Matters lesson units include an integrated system of assessments embedded within multi-lesson instructional sequences across elementary science domains, including life science, physical science, and earth science. Each unit is organized as a coherent progression of lessons connected through a conceptual storyline, with assessments aligned to unit learning goals and key science ideas.
The assessment system typically includes pre-assessments and post-assessments. Pre-assessments are used to identify students’ initial understanding before instruction, while post-assessments are administered at the end of the unit to measure students’ overall understanding of targeted concepts and practices.

Assessment tasks are embedded within hands-on, inquiry-based activities such as investigations, experiments, modeling, data collection, and analysis. Students engage in constructing explanations, applying scientific ideas, and using evidence within the context of the unit’s content, such as matter, ecosystems, or weather systems.
