Strengths

Designed as grade-specific, developmentally appropriate assessments with a consistent structure (e.g., 15-item multiple-choice format)

Cautions

The use of primarily multiple-choice items may limit the assessment's ability to capture students’ deeper reasoning or understanding of the engineering design process beyond recognition-level knowledge.

The Students’ Knowledge Tests (SKTs) are grade-specific multiple-choice assessments designed to measure elementary students’ understanding of engineering and science concepts. Each version of the test contains approximately 15 items aligned to content taught through introductory engineering lessons and curriculum units.

The instrument assesses students’ knowledge of topics such as the engineering design process, the role of engineers, and related science concepts integrated into engineering activities. Items are structured to capture students’ comprehension of these concepts at a level appropriate for their grade.

The SKTs are administered before and after instruction to examine changes in student knowledge over time. Scores are collected and analyzed to evaluate students’ understanding of engineering and science content as part of classroom learning.

The assessment is designed to provide a standardized measure of students’ knowledge of engineering-related concepts within elementary education settings.
