Tier 1 Instructional Strategies To Improve K-4 Reading Comprehension
Category: Student Learning
Uses design portfolios with drawings, explanations, and iterative prompts across planning and evaluation stages, enabling it to capture students’ decision-making processes and approaches to problem solving over time rather than just final products.
Depends heavily on interpreting young children’s drawings and researcher-recorded explanations, which can introduce subjectivity and potential inconsistencies in how students’ ideas are understood and coded.
This design portfolio measure is an assessment approach used to document and analyze young students’ thinking and decision-making during open-ended design tasks. The measure is designed to examine students’ design processes and reasoning over time within authentic, open-ended STEM learning activities. The instrument consists of structured worksheets that guide students through key stages of the design process, including planning, making, and evaluating.
At each stage, students are prompted to draw and explain their ideas, proposed solutions, and reflections on their designs. Artifacts from the portfolios, including drawings, written notes, and photographs of prototypes, are analyzed qualitatively to identify patterns in students’ approaches to design. Coding frameworks are applied to categorize how students conceptualize and attempt to solve problems.
