Instrument Overview

The Progression of Understanding Matter (PUM) is an assessment instrument designed to measure students’ conceptual understanding of matter across elementary, middle, and high school grade levels. The instrument consists of three linked forms tailored to different grade bands (grades 3–6, 7–9, and 10–12), with items varying in difficulty and covering key aspects of matter, including conservation, physical and chemical properties, and composition and structure.

The instrument uses a Rasch modeling approach to convert students’ responses into scaled scores that represent levels of understanding along a developmental progression. Scores are organized into stages that reflect increasing sophistication in students’ reasoning about matter, allowing comparisons of students’ conceptual development across both age groups and testing periods.
