The Life Science Assessment provides insight into children’s emerging inquiry skills and conceptual development by focusing on how they reason about real-world phenomena, rather than simply what they know. The assessment consists of structured, hands-on tasks centered on familiar physical science phenomena, specifically floating and sinking and water level. Within each task, children participate in a repeated prediction–observation–prediction cycle, where they first make a prediction, observe the outcome of an interaction with materials, and then revise their prediction based on evidence. This structure is intended to capture children’s ability to use evidence to update their thinking.
