This assessment is based on a learning progression framework designed to measure students’ understanding of energy concepts from upper elementary through high school. The instrument evaluates knowledge across four major categories: energy forms and transformations, energy transfer, energy dissipation and degradation, and energy conservation, with a total of 14 specific energy ideas represented. Assessment items are multiple-choice and aligned to three levels of conceptual complexity: basic, intermediate, and advanced. Items range from observable phenomena, such as changes in temperature or motion, to more abstract explanations involving atomic and molecular processes. The full assessment includes a large set of items administered across grades 4–12. Scores are used to examine how students’ understanding of energy develops across different concepts and increasing levels of complexity within the learning progression.
